Gasoline and diesel prices have slid by more than 2% over the past week, with average prices per liter standing at 1.66 euros for gasoline and 1.654 euros for diesel. A one-time 20-cent discount remains in effect, keeping prices near their lowest level since last May as set by the government.
The latest European Union Petroleum Bulletin, which tracks average prices recorded at more than 11,400 service stations between 2 and 8 August, shows both fuels continuing to fall—averaging below the 2 euro per liter threshold even without the public bonuses. These figures point to a roughly 2.5% drop for gasoline over seven days and a 2.3% drop for diesel.
Despite the decline, prices still hover around historically high levels for August. The week-over-week averages place gasoline at about 1.702 euros per liter and diesel at 1.693 euros, compared with the prior week’s figures.
Gasoline did reach its lowest price in seven days since mid-May at 1.697 euros per liter, while diesel did not dip as much, standing around 1.652 euros in the last week of the month.
These readings remain well below the records seen last June, when gasoline touched about 1.941 euros per liter and diesel hovered near 1.90 euros, even after the fuel-cut measure. The latest data also show gasoline extending a seven-week stretch of price weakness and diesel continuing its six-week trend, despite the ongoing energy-market dynamics.
It costs 91 euros to fill a 55-liter tank
Prices for both fuels are lower than the levels reached at the end of March, when they briefly surpassed 1.8 euros, prompting the government to implement a 20-cent-per-liter discount for all consumers throughout the year.
Since the start of the year, however, rising prices—stoked by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and broader energy pressures—have pushed gasoline costs up by more than 12% in the first weeks of January, with diesel advancing by almost 23% in that period.
At current levels, filling a typical 55-liter tank with gasoline or diesel costs around 91 euros. That represents roughly 10 euros more for gasoline than at the start of 2022, and about 17 euros more for diesel when choosing that fuel instead.
The discount keeps prices below the European average
According to the Oil Bulletin, Spain’s prices, including discounts, remain below the euro-area average of 1.848 euros per liter for gasoline and 1.864 euros per liter for diesel over the past week (citation: EU Petroleum Bulletin).
They also lag behind the broader 27-country European Union average, where gasoline costs 1.799 euros per liter and diesel 1.83 euros, underscoring how the Spanish market compares within the broader European context (citation: EU Petroleum Bulletin).
