Tragedy on the slopes near Acebo, in Cangas del Narcea, Asturias
What began as a recreational 4×4 motorsport event through forest trails in the council area ended dramatically at two in the afternoon when a sport utility vehicle plunged down a three-hundred-meter slope, tumbling violently along the way. A 15-year-old girl, trapped inside the wreckage, died instantly, while three others — her father, the driver J. B., and two of the young woman’s cousins — sustained serious injuries. All three were ejected from the vehicle during the long, perilous descent. The incident prompted a swift and somber response from emergency crews and the local community (official statements, ongoing investigations).
We are left to process the shock and grief that followed. The area of Fanoste lies roughly five hundred meters above the village of Castro de Limés and about five kilometers from Cangas. Investigators have not released final conclusions about the causes, though authorities indicated the vehicle left the marked track, leading to catastrophic consequences. A spokesperson for the Saltasucos Club, Raúl Arias, remarked, “Every stretch is dangerous if you stray from the trail.” He added, “I don’t know if we should forget these activities, but this will stay with us forever.” Another club member described the mood in stark terms: “We are shocked, we are devastated.”
The rescue operation involved the Asturian Fire Rescue Group evacuating the most seriously injured to the University Hospital Central of Asturias (HUCA). A second injured person was taken to the same hospital by a regional emergency medical unit. A third person was transported by a Primary Care physician to Carmen y Severo Ochoa hospital, later transferred to HUCA by helicopter. Firefighters from the SEPA unit in Tebongo arrived to extricate the young woman after authorities granted the necessary judicial authorization.
Around seven o’clock that evening, five hours after the crash, Guardia Civil officers, SEPA firefighters, and Saltasucos volunteers carried the deceased to the funeral vehicle amid a scene heavy with sorrow and strain. A family member, choosing not to speak to the press, clutched at tears while expressing the pain of the moment.
Both the father and daughter lived in Madrid, though their roots trace back to Carballo, the local area around Cangas. The girl’s mother was not present at the event, according to organizers. The two cousins who were injured reside in Cangas del Narcea. Authorities continue to piece together the sequence of events and factors that contributed to the accident (official updates, ongoing inquiries).
