Tax Administration Revenue Campaign Update for the 2022 Personal Income Tax Season

The Tax Administration has outlined its revenue plan for the 2022 campaign, with a target of entering 16,448 million euros. The campaign begins on Tuesday, and the total is 5.6% higher than the prior year. The projected amount to be refunded is 9,946 million euros, representing a 2.4% decrease from last year.

In this campaign, personal income tax returns are expected to total 22,899,000 statements, about 3.4% more than the previous year. This totals figure includes the expectation that around 60% of filings will qualify for a refund. The estimated refund amount remains at 9,946 million euros, with 13,600,000 returns anticipated to receive refunds, down slightly by 2%.

On Tuesday, April 11, the period opened for online approval, amendments, and submission of the 2022 Personal Income Tax return (IRPF). The filing process is set to begin within 48 hours on the following Thursday.

It is projected that filings entered will reach about 7,649,000 declarations, an increase of 14.2% compared to last year, totaling 16,448 million euros. Donors will not make their first payments until the campaign’s end, as has been the case in prior years.

400,000 notifications in the first hours

In response to the high demand, the net balance for this campaign is expected to be positive, around 6,502 million euros, compared to 5,389 million euros in the previous year. This outlook was shared during a press conference by Soledad Fernández, Director General of the Tax Office, who noted that more than 400,000 declarations were filed in the first hours after the period opened.

Regarding the taxation method, the forecast calls for 19,578,000 individual declarations, up 4.1% from last year, and 3,321,000 joint declarations, which would be a 0.7% decline from the previous year.

The General Manager of the Tax Office announced that the campaign will feature key innovations, including a Virtual Income Assistant to supplement the current Income Informant and reduce taxpayers’ hesitations while preparing declarations. There will also be improvements to Renta Web to make navigation more convenient and efficient for users.

Concerning inheritance tax returns, the projection is 223,354 filings, totaling 1,287 million euros, which would be 3.7% lower than the previous campaign and 3.1% lower year over year.
