La relación con la UE y la OTAN

Meloni has long shown strong alignment with Atlanticism, tracing back to her political lineage and a steady rapport with the United States. This stance has helped her earn a level of acceptance in Washington. At the same time, she has softened her rhetoric toward the European Union to ease concerns among many European leaders. Yet the core ideas persist: Meloni is skeptical about deeper European integration. Her program describes the EU as weak and paralyzed by bureaucracy. In essence, she proposes reversing some integration steps and fostering a framework where robust, autonomous nation-states cooperate on specific issues, particularly in the areas of foreign policy and defense.

La guerra en Ucrania

Meloni’s position on Ukraine stands as one of the clearest within the bloc: she has consistently advocated political and military support for Ukraine. Her reasoning is straightforward: any negotiation with Russia would disadvantage Ukraine if Kiev lacks battlefield leverage. This approach has even drawn some caution from parts of the Italian armed forces about potential gaps in defense if Italy were to retreat from arms deliveries, notably air defense systems such as the SAMP/T. Nevertheless, the policy remains central to her stance.

El conflicto de Oriente Próximo

In the Israel-Gaza conflict, Meloni has aligned closely with the United States, a stance visible in multiple sessions at the United Nations General Assembly. Italy’s government abstained on a recent resolution expanding the status of Palestine, despite opposition pressure. Still, Meloni quietly moved to help evacuate several Gazan families who have found asylum in Italy. That humanitarian action did not make it into her electoral program.

Inmigración

Meloni has framed the fight against people traffickers and the protection of Europe’s external borders as a central campaign theme. Her policy envisions a fortified Europe that channels funds to origin and transit countries to curb migration flows. This approach echoes earlier Italian efforts under Silvio Berlusconi with Libya and mirrors current steps with Tunisia. It has faced criticism for how migrants are treated in both countries.

Cambio climático

Despite facing the Mediterranean climate crisis, Meloni has recently backed the concerns of European farmers who oppose the Green Deal. Her program highlights include resisting the future labeling of food with scoring systems like Nutri-Score and reevaluating European agricultural policy. Overall, she advocates revisiting measures that affect the farming sector in Europe.

Derechos de las mujeres

One of Meloni’s persistent topics concerns gender theory, which she argues penalizes women by denying biological differences with men. She aims to advance this view across Europe. Her program, however, does not address abortion, an issue that has spurred debate amid increasing pressure from antiabortion groups in Italy. She has seen Parliament pass a law allowing certain groups to gain access to counseling centers related to abortion services.

Derechos del colectivo LGTBI

The word LGBTI does not appear in Meloni’s European program. Yet her long-standing effort to boost Italy’s birth rate has often aligned with limiting recognition of non-traditional family models and opposing surrogacy. Those positions help explain the stance toward same-sex couples seeking to have children and related reproductive policies at the European level.
