Fuel prices in Spain continued to ease last week, with gasoline showing a sustained decline for a third straight week and diesel prices dipping even more sharply. The latest figures, compiled from over 11,400 service stations across Spain for the period from May 2 to May 8, show gasoline at 1.599 euros per liter and diesel at 1.433 euros per liter. This snapshot underscores a broader trend of cheaper fuels across the country, with the discounts that were in place previously no longer active.
Gasoline, having slipped for the third consecutive week, now sits at levels not seen since January of the previous year. Diesel prices, meanwhile, have not fallen to such lows since 2022, reflecting an extended period of price declines that stretched for eight weeks. The year-over-year picture reveals that gasoline and diesel were both 2.5 percent cheaper than the same week in the prior year, while gasoline showed a notable 15.6 percent gain since the start of 2023 and diesel hovered around a 1.9 percent increase over the same period.
Looking at the most recent month, gasoline prices decreased by 2.5 percent, with diesel prices dipping about 5.9 percent. At current levels, filling a 55-liter tank with petrol costs 87.95 euros, while filling the same tank with diesel costs 78.82 euros. Those totals reflect reductions of more than 4 euros for gasoline and more than 15 euros for diesel compared to a year ago.
Despite these recent declines, fuel prices in Spain remain well below the all-time highs reached in June of the previous year. Gasoline is roughly 17 percent cheaper than its peak, and diesel is about 23.6 percent cheaper, underscoring a meaningful retreat in consumer costs at the pump.
In a broader EU context, fuel prices in Spain have stayed below the European Union average. Gasoline averaged about 1.708 euros per liter across the bloc, with diesel around 1.549 euros per liter. For the eurozone as a whole, the average stood higher, with gasoline near 1.761 euros per liter and diesel around 1.577 euros per liter, highlighting the relative affordability of fuels in Spain during the latest reporting period.
