Materials Developer Center Keldysh, part of Roskosmos, is gearing up to create a new spacesuit design that uses a self-healing material. The information was reported by TASS, citing Vladimir Koshlakov, the center’s general director.

“The material itself performs well, but the design requires completion. We have shifted from a flat, layered material to a cellular form, with cells filled by this substance,” Koshlakov explained.

He added that the initial version of the material was developed in collaboration with Zvezda Research and Production Company.

The center’s general manager noted that gloves and elbow joints suffer the most wear in a spacesuit, making those areas critical to durability and performance.

Earlier, the European Space Agency revealed results from a competition to generate spacesuit concepts for extra-vehicular activity. Ninety entries were submitted, and experts ultimately selected five winning concepts for further development.

There are reports from Russia about efforts to explore perpetual-motion ideas for satellites.
