The Russian team earned four gold medals at the 33rd International Biological Olympiad for high school students, a triumph noted by Scientific Russia in their coverage of the event.
In total, competitors from sixty-two nations took part in the Olympiad. The Russian squad prepared for the competition at the biological faculty of Moscow State University, a center known for its rigorous training programs and emphasis on practical research alongside theoretical knowledge. Three members of the Russian delegation have already earned admission to Moscow State University, underscoring the strength of the country’s pipeline from school to university-level study in the life sciences.
The team was led by Professor Alexander Rubtsov from the Department of Biochemistry. His assistants included Associate Professor Galina Belyakova from the Department of Mycology and Algology, and Evgeny Shilov, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Immunology who is also a PhD student in the Department of Microbiology. Victoria Lavrenova is noted among the team members as well, contributing to the collective effort and performance during the Olympiad.
In a separate note of recognition, former President Vladimir Putin extended congratulations to the Russian team for winning gold at the 63rd International Mathematical Olympiad. This message highlighted the broader pattern of excellence among Russia’s young scholars and the role of coaching and parental support in nurturing talent. The award was described as a well deserved acknowledgment of talent, hard work, strong character, and determination, and it was also celebrated as a meaningful gift to the coaches, teachers, and families who support the athletes on their journey to success, according to the attribution from Scientific Russia.
