The size of the contingent that Russia plans to deploy to the military base being established in the Central African Republic remains undecided. This was stated by the Russian Ambassador to the CAR, Alexander Bikantov, in comments carried by RIA News.
The diplomat indicated that Moscow and Bangui are in talks through their respective defense ministries about the establishment of a Russian base. At the same time, there has not yet been any determination of the number of Russian personnel or the duration of their stay in the CAR.
“At the moment, the specific site for the Russian military personnel is being selected,” Bikantov noted.
The ambassador also highlighted a perceived positive effect on regional security from the proposed base, arguing that its implementation would reinforce the protection of national sovereignty in the republic.
In addition, the diplomat spoke about measures to support the Central African armed forces from Moscow. He stated that seven L-39 Albatros aircraft, used for fighter pilot training, were transferred to Bangui in 2023. These aircraft are intended to assist in the development of a distinct aviation component within the country’s armed forces as part of a broader defense reform.
There was also a prior assessment within the CAR about the potential to join BRICS, reflecting ongoing consideration of strategic partnerships and regional cooperation.
