A forecast of a new peak in Covid-19 cases in Russia was shared by Nikolai Kryuchkov, a candidate of medical sciences and an immunologist, during a radio interview reported by Sputnik. He observed that coronavirus infections have been rising in Russia since late August into early September. The immunologist suggested that a notable uptick could occur in early October, with the precise timing depending on ongoing monitoring of the situation.
The expert projected that the autumn wave would reach its highest point in November and gradually subside in December. He also expressed optimism about a clear decline in case numbers over the New Year holidays. Yet, Kryuchkov warned that the epidemiological picture could shift at the end of January if a new variant of the Omicron strain emerges.
Regarding variants, Kryuchkov pointed to the BA.2.86 subvariant, described as a potentially more aggressive form, sometimes referred to in shorthand as a pyrrole option. Although this subvariant had not been detected in Russia at the time, it was spreading and mutating in other countries. There was no current evidence that Omicron itself posed greater danger than earlier strains.
The immunologist concluded that vaccination remains the best defense against infection and its spread.
Earlier reports from Romania noted a rise in Covid-19 cases, underscoring regional vigilance and the importance of monitoring cross-border trends and vaccination coverage.
