Repsol is changing how discounts work across its gas station network. As the largest oil company in Spain, it plans to pull back the general 10-cent per liter fuel discount and begin a new reduction on April 1, a move the Government decided to maintain after the end of the mandatory 20-cent cut. The new savings will extend to customers who purchase other energy services from the group, including electricity, gas, heating, electric mobility, or solar self-consumption.

Under the new program, Repsol introduces deferred discounts ranging from 5 to 20 cents per liter. It can also reach up to 100% in fuel and electric vehicle charging for users who pay with Waylet, the company’s payment platform, with eligibility influenced by the specific energy services contracted by each driver. The framework aims to reward loyalty and simplify savings for everyday consumption.

These savings can be applied at Repsol service stations and on electric charging points, or incorporated into invoices from the electricity and gas supplier, as well as purchases like butane cylinders, diesel fuel, and other hundreds of participating commercial establishments in the road network. This approach broadens the scope of where customers can realize value from their Repsol relationship, beyond gasoline alone.

Repsol is thereby exerting competitive pressure on other major players in the gas station sector, including rivals who have yet to decide how they will adjust their discount strategies for drivers at the pump. Led by Josu Jon Imaz, Repsol is shifting the market by tying energy services and mobility together, a strategy designed to deepen customer loyalty and position the group as a primary energy services provider rather than a fuel-only operator. This move is viewed as a bold alignment of fuels with home energy products, mobility solutions, and comfort services, all wrapped in a single ecosystem.

The company now stands as the first operator to extend additional discounts to regular customers who have long enjoyed the existing government incentive, stacking its savings with the government’s 20-cent discount. Following government decisions at the end of 2022 to limit extended support, Repsol extended its 10-cent-per-liter discount through the end of March 2023, signaling a commitment to ongoing consumer savings. In public statements, the company highlighted that last year’s savings delivered to gas station customers approached several hundred million euros, underscoring the scale and impact of the program. This articulation reflects Repsol’s strategy to leverage its integrated energy services to build deeper loyalty and drive repeat engagement across multiple touchpoints.
