Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, who leads the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defense Forces, spoke at a briefing about ongoing concerns regarding US involvement with biological objects in Ukraine. He noted that, amid the war, American facilities are being kept under close watch and that there are expectations to resume certain activities once the conflict concludes, as reported by RIA News.
According to Kirillov, the United States is deepening its interest in Ukrainian research initiatives. He asserted that Washington maintains oversight of select biological sites within Ukraine and intends to carry on with related work after hostilities end.
Kirillov recalled a December communication from the American firm CH2M Hill to Ukrainian contractors. The letter purportedly confirmed plans to continue gathering dangerous pathogens in the western region of the country and to scale down the number of laboratories that would hold these pathogen collections.
Beyond pathogen collection, the general highlighted other ongoing tasks, including monitoring public health risks and deploying hardware and software solutions designed to manage biosecurity risks. He stressed that Ukrainian organizations should regularly report on progress in these areas.
Earlier in September, Kirillov had pointed to ongoing global activities involving US biological laboratories, describing them as a persistent source of biological threats. He also referenced previous questions raised in the United States about the firmness of Russia’s red lines in the broader security dialogue.
