This Monday, August 8, marked the initial date on the calendar for a government-backed promotion: Renfe announced a batch of free train coupons for middle-distance services in the final quarter of the year.

The Ministry of Transport, as a preliminary step toward the payment process, showed how users can log in on the Renfe site to access the benefit. The specifics of the measure were outlined in prior weeks, and the steps to participate were described for interested travelers.

Which trains will be free in Alicante from September?

At first glance, the recording associated with this Monday did not reveal anything especially new. The promotion was introduced with fanfare, yet some worried it would overload Renfe’s public-facing systems. In practice, there was nothing unique that day that an ordinary user could not attempt on any day of the year.

Travelers observed that there was no special procedure for those who already have an account on Renfe.com, and there were no extra steps required for current customers. For the moment, no additional actions are necessary beyond what regular Renfe users already perform.

As the campaign continued, it was noted that on Wednesday, August 24, potential participants would be able to deposit 20 euros to obtain one of the multi-trip vouchers. These vouchers are set to become available starting September 1 for eligible travelers, widening access to the benefit.

Here’s how Renfe’s free multi-trip passes work

The scheme operates within the rules for Cercanías and Media Distancia services. To qualify for a refund, travelers must make at least 16 trips before year’s end, with the refund issued to the same card or bank account used for the initial payment.

Officials project the bonds could benefit a large number of trips, with estimates suggesting tens of millions of journeys could be covered. The plan, articulated by Minister Raquel Sánchez Jiménez, targets a broad user base and remains restricted to travel between designated origin and destination stations to ensure proper accounting and use.
