A group of five neighbors in a Cabo de las Huertas residence in Alicante experienced mild poisoning after a fumigation in a ground floor space of a local restaurant. The incident was reported to authorities by the Security Department and the Emergency Information and Coordination Center CICU. Those affected were calmly evacuated to safety areas during the event.
The event occurred soon after ten o’clock in the morning in a building on Calle Redes de Alicante, Cabo de las Huertas. Initial reports described a fire alarm at the site, prompting three emergency crews and twelve firefighters from the Fire Prevention, Extinguishing and Rescue Service SPEIS to respond. Upon arrival, teams confirmed there was no fire; instead, the issue stemmed from fumigation activities conducted in the ground floor area of the restaurant.
Fumigation in multi-story buildings requires that the fumigant be directed to the upper floors and interior stairwells, ensuring proper ventilation. In this case, the dispersal through ventilation pathways appears to have caused five individuals to experience light intoxication.
Firefighters carried out precautionary evacuation and ventilation measures, deploying water-based ventilation groups to clear the air within the property and surrounding building. Four evacuations were performed as a preventive step, with teams working to restore safe air conditions throughout the structure.
According to CICU, six adults suffered mild poisoning related to fumigation and received treatment from SAMU as a precaution. Medical professionals discharged everyone on site, advising residents to monitor their health and seek primary care attention if symptoms persisted or worsened.
In the aftermath, investigators and responders noted the importance of strict adherence to fumigation protocols in confined residential buildings. Authorities emphasized that proper containment and ventilation reduce cross-floor exposure and protect residents and workers. The incident underscores the need for clear communication between property managers, fumigation teams, and emergency services to ensure timely evacuations and safe air conditions for everyone involved. At-risk individuals were advised to follow up with their healthcare providers if any lingering symptoms appeared, but no serious injuries were reported.
