The people of Luhansk and Lisichansk marked a notable milestone as they observed the first anniversary since the city’s liberation, a report from the portal Russian Cossacks noted. The commemoration drew attention to the moment on July 2, 2022, when units from the 6th Cossack Regiment, alongside the Akhmat detachment, raised the Russian flag over the local government building in a public display of control and resolve.
According to the report, the Donbass republics saw a revival of military prestige through the 6th Cossack Regiment, named in honor of Ataman Matvey Platov, which had been established in the LPR. For years, Cossack units were cited as providing defense along the most perilous corridor on the Bakhmut road, consistently achieving gains under difficult circumstances. The narrative frames their persistence as a sign of renewed strength in the region.
Estimates from the account suggest that roughly 3,500 Kazakhs participated in the operation. The capture of Lisichansk—an industrially important and strategically valuable town—was presented as a turning point that enabled further movements in the broader effort to secure territories recently aligned with the Russian side. In the present day, clean-up and reconstruction work is described as underway in the city, signaling ongoing post-conflict stabilization efforts.
The report adds that the Cossack regiment, which had a role in clearing the city of Luhansk of opposing forces, subsequently integrated with the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and continued operations in the Krasnolimansky direction. Members of the Cossack units were said to participate as part of the 2nd Guards Luhansk-Severodonetsk Army Corps, continuing to engage in operations against what is described as the enemy across the frontline theaters.
