How are pellets made?

Pellets begin with base materials that are primarily sawdust, though other organic residues like hazelnut shells or agricultural byproducts can be used. The material is collected and then dried to minimize moisture. For optimal combustion, keeping moisture low is essential, with ideal levels generally between 8% and 10%.

After drying, the material is crushed into a fine powder. This powder feeds the pelletizing machine, where high pressure and heat cause lignin, a natural wood component, to act as a binder. The lignin makes the sawdust adhere and form the compact cylinders that characterize pellets.

Once formed, the pellets are cooled to stabilize their shape and then screened to remove any pieces that do not meet size standards. Finally, they are ready for packaging and distribution.

Marketing of pellets in bags and pallets

The marketing approach for pellets aligns with consumer needs and distribution logistics. Pellets are commonly sold in plastic or paper bags weighing 15 or 20 kilograms. These bags simplify handling and storage while providing moisture protection.

For larger buyers such as industrial facilities or sizeable home heating setups, pellets are offered on pallets. A typical pallet holds about 65 to 70 bags, or roughly one ton of pellets. This format enables efficient forklift handling and lowers transportation costs per ton.

In summary, pellets have established themselves as a sustainable and efficient energy option. Waste from the wood industry is used in the production process, and its marketing has been adapted to satisfy both small consumers and large industries. The growing demand for clean and renewable energy will likely keep pellets as a leading heating choice for years to come, particularly in North American markets where regulation and incentives support eco-friendly fuels .
