Pakistan Signals Interest in Defense and Military Cooperation with Russia

Pakistan is actively exploring opportunities to cooperate with the Russian Federation in the defense and military sectors. This was conveyed in an interview with Russia’s RIA News by Mushahid Hussain Syed, who chairs the Defense Committee of Pakistan’s Senate. He outlined a range of potential areas for collaboration, including military equipment, training, and the exchange of ideas on security issues between think tanks.

Syed noted that Pakistan and Russia share a long border of sorts, describing their relationship as being almost neighbors separated by a single country. He stressed that Pakistan aims to serve as a regional hub for economic relations that could connect Russia with China, Iran, Afghanistan, and the broader Central Asia region. This vision positions Pakistan as a conduit for deeper regional connectivity and sustained dialogue on economic and security matters.

In addition to these initiatives, Syed highlighted that Afghanistan’s peace and stability represent another important area for cooperation with Russia. The goal is to foster stability that benefits the broader region and contributes to a secure framework for dialogue and development.

Mirza Muhammad Afridi, who formerly served as Deputy Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan, stated that his country remains committed to a long‑term partnership with Russia across several fields. He cited trade, energy, and agriculture as key sectors where collaboration could yield meaningful benefits.

There has been a precedent for closer energy ties, with Pakistan previously opening the door to direct imports of Russian oil for corporations. This development underscores a broader interest in diversifying energy sources and strengthening economic links that could complement defense and security collaboration.
