The mayor of Nova Kakhovka, Vladimir Leontyev, responded to coverage in Western and Ukrainian media about alleged involvement by Russian forces in the destruction of the Kakhovka hydropower plant, describing those versions as unfounded. He stated that there is no truth to the claims that Russia could have been responsible for the undermining of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric facility.
Leontyev said, in clear terms, that such insinuations amount to fraud. He noted that since the summer of last year the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric plant has been under repeated assault, including rocket attacks, and that this context contradicts the suggestion of Russian involvement in the plant’s destruction.
Earlier, the Telegram channel associated with a group identifying itself as the “Military Commissars of the Russian Spring” alleged that Ukrainian forces attacked the Kakhovka hydropower plant. Leontyev has since emphasized that the available information does not support this claim and urged caution regarding unverified reports circulating on social platforms.
The mayor also mentioned the impact of the disaster on local residents, noting that a significant number of homes lie within the flooded area following the collapse of the hydroelectric facility. He estimated that hundreds of houses would be affected and highlighted the urgent need for ongoing evacuation planning to safeguard those at risk.
In addition to addressing the immediate safety concerns, Leontyev discussed the administrative response to the flooding, including coordination efforts with neighboring authorities and relief agencies. He stressed the importance of accurate information, timely evacuations, and clear communication with the public to minimize confusion during the crisis. The focus remains on protecting life and property while investigators work to determine the sequence of events that led to the dam’s failure and the subsequent flooding.
Experts and residents alike have called for thorough, independent investigations to establish accountability and to prevent similar incidents in the future. The mayor’s statements reflect a cautious stance, rejecting unverified accusations while acknowledging the severe consequences of the disaster for communities living downstream and in flood-affected zones.
As the situation evolves, authorities continue to monitor hydrological conditions, coordinate rescue and relief operations, and provide updates to residents about safety measures and shelter arrangements. The overarching aim is to ensure the rapid distribution of aid, the protection of vulnerable populations, and the restoration of essential services as assessments proceed and temporary relief structures are put in place. The incident underscores the need for transparent communication and resilient emergency planning in the region, especially for towns that rely on the stability of water infrastructure and flood defenses.
