The judge rules there will be no bail for the pastor, and the case unfolds with a grim outcome. A dog attack claimed the life of Arancha Corcero Girón, a 27-year-old nurse from Roales del Pan near Zamora. On October 23, 2023, at about six in the evening, the woman was fifty meters from the grazing area when five dogs suddenly surged from behind as she attempted to flee. The brutal assault left her body on the ground after numerous bites, ending her life and shocking the two neighboring communities connected to the province.

The magistrate rejected the request for bail made by the special prosecutor, insisting the accused, a farm owner under investigation for gross negligence in murder, should remain in custody. Yet the Prosecutor’s Office did not push for provisional detention as a precaution. Their stance notes there is no flight risk, no immediate danger of evidence being destroyed, and no risk of additional crimes before trial, given the accused has cooperated with Civil Security and the court inquiry. The defense of the industrialist from La Hiniesta has consistently portrayed the accused as cooperative, a line repeated by local sources.

This publication has sought comment from Prada Moral, the law firm representing the pastor. The firm has expressed strong disagreement with the judge’s ruling, arguing that procedural guarantees have been seriously compromised and that the decision imposes a much more severe precautionary measure than any party had requested. They contend that a bail option—preferred by the family’s counsel—had not been considered and that the Public Prosecutor’s Office did not seek temporary detention.

The defense has filed an appeal with the Zamora Court to overturn the judge’s order and to grant conditional release to the pastor, stating they hope for a swift resolution in the interest of justice. The case has sent shockwaves through two towns and the wider province, given the fatal outcome of the event that drew widespread attention.

“He always cooperated with the investigation”

The industrialist has remained in his hometown of La Hiniesta, where he operates a sheep farm with more than 400 head. He has stayed on the ground since the brutal attack on Arancha, the Roales del Pan nurse who lived with her parents, who have now lost their only daughter.

Legal observers note that current Spanish law restricts a judge’s range of action to measures proposed by the parties. In this case, the possibility of pretrial detention with or without bail is a central question. The defense may argue that the court could have limited the accused to bail conditions and not ordered preventive detention.
