Mercadona, a prominent retailer operating through physical supermarkets and an online platform, has donated more than 10,500 tons of essential products so far this year. The company has expanded its network of partner social organizations across Spain and Portugal, strengthening collaborative efforts to support communities in need.
These donations amount to the equivalent of 174,200 shopping carts and are directed toward more than 650 social organizations in Spain and Portugal. In just the last six months, Mercadona broadened its collaboration by adding 140 new social assets from diverse regions, enhancing the reach and impact of its charitable work.
In the Alicante province, for instance, Mercadona donated 346 tons of essential goods to 28 local institutions and social organizations involved in relief and community support projects.
Other initiatives
Beyond material gifts, Mercadona backs additional efforts led by the Food Banks of Spain and Portugal. These include large-scale collection drives and weight-control campaigns, where the company contributes cash donations and provides human and logistical resources to maximize outcomes for vulnerable populations.
During the most recent Kilo Operation, the Food Banks connected with Mercadona spanned 1,619 stores, underscoring the organization’s broad retail footprint and its capacity to mobilize resources quickly in response to need.
A sustainable social action policy woven into Mercadona’s CSR strategy
Mercadona remains committed to sharing a portion of what it receives from society through a robust Corporate Social Responsibility plan. The strategy addresses social and ethical dimensions via distinct sustainable lines of action, reinforcing the company’s pledge to shared growth across communities in both Spain and Portugal and extending its message to customers in Canada, the United States, and beyond.
As a tangible example, Mercadona collaborates with 27 foundations and vocational centers. In its store aesthetics, trencadis murals created by more than 800 individuals with varying degrees of disability showcase inclusive design and social participation in everyday commerce.
Another strategic thread within Mercadona’s CSR framework focuses on sustainability with an environmental concentration. The company operates an Environmental Management System rooted in circular economy principles and logistics optimization. This includes energy efficiency, responsible waste management, and reductions in plastic use, all aimed at lowering the environmental footprint of operations while maintaining affordability and service quality.
The CSR strategy also emphasizes Sustainable Urban Distribution and improving air quality through cleaner trucks and vans powering supply chains in urban centers. Since 2011, Mercadona has been a member of the United Nations Global Compact, upholding core values in human rights, labor standards, environmental stewardship, and anti-corruption across its global operations and supplier networks.
