The surge in prices has pushed many companies to adjust with their workers. Salaries rose to counter inflation. Mercadona, the supermarket chain, is among those that boosted base pay, announcing a 6.5% increase for its staff in 2022. This change covered roughly 96,000 employees and their additional supplements.

As a result, employees aligned with the CPI have benefited, with the average gross salary for staff at the company founded by Juan Roig increasing by 1,425 euros in the January payroll for the year. This reflects the impact on workers across the organization, including those with varying roles and levels of responsibility.

Amortized increments

The wage rise Mercadona will begin implementing in 2023 will include an extra outlay of 200 million euros. The company notes that this cost will be offset by productivity gains and cost savings achieved in 2022. Last year the chain already increased the salary of its Spain-based employees by 6.5%, which contributed to a rise in productivity of about 9%.

New gross monthly payments will vary with an employee’s seniority. Reported by Business Insider, more seasoned workers with more than four years of service will begin receiving higher pay, while new entrants with less than one year will receive payments around 1,508 euros. For staff with longer tenure, the adjusted figures reflect ongoing recognition of experience and commitment to the company’s workforce.
