Maximus Palace Fire and Related Incidents: Updates from Greece and Chelyabinsk

A fire occurred at Maximus Palace in Athens, the official residence of Greece’s prime minister. This update stems from a statement issued by the Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection and reported by RIA News.

The blaze started in a storage area on the mansion’s first floor during the morning hours of January 20. Firefighters responded promptly, with a team of 24 firefighters operating seven engines. The flames were brought under control after a period of effort, resulting in only minor damage to the building.

Authorities are now conducting an investigation through the department in charge of inquiries to determine the cause and scope of the incident.

The Grand Maxim’s Mansion (Μέγαρο Μαξίμου) has served as the official residence associated with the prime minister since 1982. Located in central Athens near Syntagma Square, the edifice houses the offices of the head of government, while the prime minister does not make it their home.

In Chelyabinsk, on January 19, a large fire broke out at the Eastern City market within the European-Asian shopping and entertainment complex. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the affected area reached about 1,000 square meters. Emergency crews deployed 96 rescuers and 36 pieces of equipment to combat the blaze.

Earlier reports noted a person who had been set on fire. The individual had remained at the former partner’s residence and later served a six-year prison term. (attribution: Ministry of Emergency Situations; local authorities)
