Teams assigned to the Copla Plan, Coastal Rescue and Recovery, and Sea Rescue operations were mobilized after a 15-year-old boy disappeared in the waters off the coast of Mar Menor. The search began early in the morning following reports of a capsized boat. The incident involved three youths who had set out to sea; two of them were rescued, while the missing teenager prompted a large-scale response coordinated by the Murcia Region Emergency Coordination Center 112.
Early Friday, at 2:34 a.m., 1-1-2 received a distress call from a resident living near the Los Alcázares waterfront. The caller reported hearing cries for help from Mar Menor and described the scene close to the pier. Responders quickly confirmed the warning and began a coordinated rescue operation.
Local Police patrols arrived on the scene to confirm the witness account. A municipal Civil Protection rescue boat and a rescue craft from the Los Alcázares Maritime Club were mobilized to assist in the search and recovery efforts. Two individuals, aged 16 and 22, were located and brought to the port for immediate medical evaluation and care.
Medical teams were standing by at the port, where a Mobile Emergency Unit coordinated from the health authorities and emergency services provided treatment. Both individuals received care for exposure and hypothermia, a common risk in open-water rescues, and were transported to a medical facility for further observation.
During the operation, the rescuers were informed of a third person, a minor under 15 years old, who had been aboard the vessel at the time of capsizing. The Emergency Coordination Center of the Region of Murcia, along with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center, activated a rescue protocol that included land, sea, and air search assets. The effort involved patrols from the Local Police, Civil Security teams, Red Cross personnel, and Civil Protection volunteers, supported by ships and a Sea Rescue helicopter.
The whereabouts and condition of the boat were continually tracked as the search progressed. Investigators and rescue coordinators confirmed the vessel’s position and proceeded with measures to secure the area while coordinating the safe return of any survivors to the port. The operation underscored the importance of cross-agency collaboration and rapid deployment of resources to maximize the chances of locating missing individuals in maritime emergencies.
As the search continued, officials noted that the boat had already been located and the operation shifted toward a thorough search and recovery effort. The craft was later identified and moved toward the Los Alcázares port for continued assessment and any necessary follow-up actions. The incident highlighted the dangers of open-water activities in coastal zones and the decisive role of coordinated rescue services in safeguarding lives near Mar Menor.
