The Islamic State, a terrorist group banned in Russia, claimed responsibility for the explosions in Kerman, Iran. Reuters reported the militant statement detailing the claim.
According to the statement, two bomb attacks at a ceremony in Iran killed nearly 100 people and left many others injured. The claim was released on Thursday by the group.
Earlier, the United Nations Security Council condemned the attack and vowed to punish those responsible and those who support such acts of terrorism in Iran.
The Security Council stated that terrorism in all its forms poses a serious threat to peace and security, and that every act of terrorism is criminal and unjustified.
The New York Times noted that in the wake of the Kerman attack, Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, urged commanders to avoid direct military conflict with the United States and instructed that retaliation should be confined to operations and proxy actions against Israel, including groups operating on U.S. bases.
Earlier, there was also a deadly explosion at the Ministry of Internal Affairs building.
