Researchers from the Texas College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have highlighted several health advantages linked to cardamom. The spice appears to support fat reduction, assist in building lean muscle, and ease inflammatory processes. The study details are published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
The investigation involved daily consumption of cardamom extract by mice. The results suggested a rise in appetite in the short term, together with reductions in body fat and increases in lean mass. In addition, the bioactive constituents of cardamom may help neutralize oxidative stress, a condition associated with persistent fatigue, trouble sleeping, irritability, reduced appetite, digestive disorders, headaches, unstable blood pressure, frequent infections, allergies, and intestinal disturbances, among other symptoms.
Scientists propose that these effects arise from modulation of neural networks that control lipolysis in liver and skeletal muscle tissues and from changes in mitochondrial oxidative metabolism. This mechanism could explain how cardamom influences energy balance and tissue composition in living organisms.
The researchers also provided a preliminary estimate for human use. An intake of roughly 80 milligrams of cardamom bioactives daily is suggested for an adult weighing about 60 kilograms. Achieving this dosage could be feasible by incorporating 8 to 10 cardamom pods into daily meals or beverages.
