Government convenes sectoral energy conference to align austerity measures

The government convened a sectoral conference at 10 am this Monday with district councilors to review the details of the austerity plan and to dispel any doubts about the scope and implementation of the measures that are set to take effect on Wednesday.

The meeting will be chaired by the Vice President and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Theresa Rivera, alongside the Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Kings Maroto, and the Minister of State for Energy, Sarah Aagesen. The gathering will take place electronically, in line with communications from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, and was organized by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) with the participation of regional authorities responsible for Energy, Industry and Commerce.

On Tuesday, a separate meeting with senior leadership is scheduled, with Joan Groizard, executive director of the Institute for Energy Diversity and Conservation (IDAE), set to attend in place of Teresa Rivera. This distinction underscores the coordinated approach across agencies as the plan is reviewed.

Isabel Diaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid, indicated on Saturday that the manager should meet with district councilors at a level above purely technical discourse to discuss the energy plan in depth. The move reflects a push for broader dialogue and a clearer understanding of how the policy will unfold across regions.

According to the Ministry of Ecological Transition, the aim of these discussions is to harmonize energy saving and efficiency policies across all levels of government. The effort seeks to reinforce Spain’s solidarity and its commitment to reduce energy consumption by seven percent ahead of European Union targets, thereby helping to mitigate the socio-economic impacts associated with the broader geopolitical situation, including the implications of the ongoing crisis in Europe.
