Fundación Mediterráneo carries a legacy spanning more than a century, safeguarding a rich artistic, documentary, and architectural heritage that intimately connects with the province of Alicante, the city of Valencia, and the Region of Murcia. Its mission to conserve, study, and share this heritage guides every effort and shapes the daily work of the foundation, ensuring a living link between past and present for communities across southern Spain and beyond to the Americas and Canada, where cultural dialogue thrives.
The Fundación Mediterráneo Art Collection stands as a cornerstone of contemporary Spanish art. Created in 2002 with a clear purpose: to serve the art world and society at large, it now comprises 212 works by 125 prominent artists who shaped the Spanish Transition and continued to shape art through today. The collection embraces diverse media and languages, including painting, drawing, sculpture, video, installation, and photography. It is a dynamic chorus that voices the evolution of visual culture across three decades, inviting visitors to explore the conversations, tensions, and innovations that define a generation and its successors.
The most celebrated facet of the collection is its inaugural photography exhibition, a project that invites audiences to reflect on themselves and their surroundings through the lens of eminent photographers. This showcase presents a natural entry point to contemporary art, demystifying complex ideas and offering approachable, insightful encounters with image-making, composition, and visual storytelling. As a result, visitors experience a direct and human dialogue with works that trace personal and social narratives across time.
The project originated at La Llotgeta – Center Fotogràfic, an architectural jewel in the heart of Valencia with a history of presenting innovative image-making in a setting that enhances the works themselves. After thoughtful consideration, the foundation proposed an open, evolving exhibition that can be experienced across multiple rooms within the foundation’s spaces. The initial phase unfolded in Valencia and Alicante, with a subsequent expansion that now includes the city of Alcoi, reflecting a growing regional commitment and a flexible model that allows fresh perspectives to emerge while preserving the integrity of each room’s character and the collection’s intent. This approach ensures audiences encounter a living presentation of contemporary photography and related media, curated to reveal interconnections among artists, themes, and places.
