Eyewitness Inspection

A team of traffic accident reconstruction specialists from the Guardia Civil will travel from Spain to Mallorca to support the investigation into the Sant Llorenç bus crash on the Sant Llorenç road toward Son Servera. The incident left 28 people injured. Officials will examine the vehicle’s safety system, commonly called the black box, which logs driving conditions up to the moment of the crash, including speed, braking, and steering. Authorities expect to wrap up inquiries within a few days and determine the accident’s causes.

From the Balearic Traffic Unit, plans are in place to seek the help of a group of big-accident reconstruction experts to probe the Sant Llorenç event. These specialists could arrive from the Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team (ERAT) based in Madrid or from the Traffic Accident Investigation and Reconstruction Department (DIRAT) at the Guardia Civil Traffic School in Mérida, depending on availability and logistics.

In either case, the professionals involved are veterans at investigating serious traffic crashes with multiple victims. They bring advanced computer tools that enable precise replication of the trajectory and conditions that led to the incident.

On-site Visual Inspection

At the same time, Balearic traffic officers carried out a thorough on-site inspection at the crash scene and prepared to examine the bus’s safety device, the black box, which recorded all driving circumstances prior to the disaster, such as speed, braking, and the route taken.

The Civil Guard updated the count of those injured. Six people suffered severe injuries, 22 were lightly injured, and 26 were unharmed. Among the unharmed is the bus driver and a tour group guide. None of the injured are in critical or life-threatening condition. The group consisted of Imserso tourists from Aragon, Galicia, Castilla y León, and the Canary Islands.

Alcohol and Drugs Tests Negative

The bus driver, a 62-year-old Spaniard, tested negative for alcohol and drugs in the examinations conducted by the Civil Guard. In his initial remarks after the crash, he attributed the accident to a mechanical failure in the vehicle’s steering, which allegedly caused the bus to veer off the roadway.
