The plan for the Project 636.3 Varshavyanka class submarine series is not limited to a single Pacific Fleet program. Reports indicate that in the future additional submarines of this design will enter service with other Russian fleets as well, expanding the reach of this propulsion and stealth platform across the Navy.

According to statements attributed to the Navy Commander-in-Chief, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, the program will continue beyond the fifth vessel, Mozhaisk, and there will be further deployments of the same class to different fleets. The official remark underscored that Mozhaisk represents not the conclusion of the line but a stepping stone to broader distribution of the class within the Russian Navy.

On November 28, reports emerged that the Mozhaisk, built for the Pacific Fleet, underwent a ceremonial flag-raising as part of its acceptance or commissioning sequence. The event signified the submarine’s transition from construction status to active service or near-service readiness, marking an important milestone for the fleet it serves.

Mozhaisk was the fifth unit in a six-boat batch delivered to the Pacific Fleet from the Admiralty Shipyards in St. Petersburg. The series also includes Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Volkhov, Magadan, Ufa, and Mozhaisk, with Yakutsk continuing to operate under the fleet’s patrol and readiness framework. This lineup demonstrates a coherent strategy to modernize naval capabilities in the region, while keeping future units aligned with the same design philosophy and performance expectations.

Prior to Mozhaisk’s entry, it was anticipated that a nuclear-powered submarine named Arkhangelsk would be brought into service in the near term. This fits into the broader objective of sustaining a diversified submarine force that blends endurance, speed, and stealth with scalable mission profiles across different maritime theaters.

Historically, the program has been framed within the context of regional and strategic balance. It has been noted that the existence and deployment of these submarines contribute to deterrence and maritime security dynamics, reinforcing the capability to operate across multiple theaters and geopolitical environments. The design emphasizes reliable buoyancy, robust propulsion, and proven missile systems that enable sustained underwater patrols and flexible targeting options for strategic missions.
