The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations urged that sparklers be used outdoors, especially the colored varieties that can release hazardous substances. This guidance was shared with the press service at the capital’s headquarters and summarized for general safety in moments of celebration.
Officials recommend holding a lit Bengal candle at a slight angle away from the body, keeping the metal portion pointed backward so sparks do not land on hands, clothing, or footwear.
For sparklers that have chips, rough edges, or an uneven pyrotechnic coating, experts advise not using them at all to avoid unpredictable burning or scattering sparks.
The ministry also urged purchasing sparklers only from reputable, specialized shops. Attention should be paid to the color of the pyrotechnic composition, which should appear black, gray, or silver to indicate a proper formulation and safety standards.
After use, extinguish sparklers by dipping the burnt handles into a container of water to ensure they are completely cooled before disposal.
Earlier safety guidance covered how to launch fireworks responsibly. Non-professionals should attend such displays strictly as spectators and maintain a distance of at least 100 meters from the action. Fireworks must not be set off near homes, power lines, or other critical infrastructure, and it is important to consider wind conditions since strong gusts can cause sparks to blow back toward balconies or windows, potentially causing damage or injury.
