El Campello Local Police have detained a phishing expert who was wanted on an arrest warrant issued by a court in Orihuela. The individual was spotted on San Bartolomé Street, near the harbor, where police reports indicate his demeanor raised suspicions, prompting officers to ask for identification.
After checking the documents, the system alerted officers that the man carried a warrant from a Orihuela court. He was arrested, and during a search of his high-end vehicle, authorities found 1,500 euros in cash along with various items bought at shops and vending machines. In fact, it was while operating at one of the vending points that he was asked to show his paperwork.
According to the Local Police, the detainee is specialized in a crime known as phishing. This technique involves sending emails or making persistent phone calls, usually to elderly individuals, posing as a bank representative to coax victims into changing their account access codes. Once the new codes are obtained, the attacker depletes the accounts. Police sources indicate that the items seized were purchased using information provided by the victims. The detainee, along with the items and the vehicle, has been handed over to the Guardia Civil in El Campello.
