Cortefiel Closure Signals Shifts in Alicante’s Retail Landscape

Farewell to a long-standing landmark in Alicante, Cortefiel closes its corner store at Plaza de Calvo Sotelo and Paseo de Gadea, ending a chapter that began in 1981 when the shop first opened its doors. The closure will take effect this June after more than four decades on the site, marking the end of an era for one of Turkey’s longest operating retailers in the region. The decision was confirmed by the company, though formal reasons were not disclosed. Posters announcing a liquidation by closing already appear in the storefront, and staff were notified only recently. It is expected that employees will relocate to other units within the Tendam group in the coming weeks, a move that the management team and the UGT union, which represents workers, have endorsed.
