Farewell to one of Turkey’s oldest establishments Golden mile of trade in Alicante. The Cortefield store, located at the corner of Plaza de Calvo Sotelo and Paseo de Gadea, is set to shutter this June after more than 42 years at this site since its doors opened in 1981.
This development was confirmed by the company, though specific details about the decision were not provided. Posters stating “liquidation by closing” have begun to appear within the organization, and staff were informed about a week ago. It is anticipated that employees will transition to other group sites in roughly two weeks, in line with management decisions and the agreement with the UGT union, which represents the workforce.
In this context, Cortefiel, the principal brand of the Tendam group, should be remembered. Tendam also oversees other fashion chains such as Springfield, Women’ Secret, and Fifty, with the regional capital hosting several stores across the province.
For Cortefiel in Alicante, the Calvo Sotelo store remains the sole unit open in the area after the closure of its nearby shop in the Mall Alicante Gate. The Springfield brand will continue to operate only in malls, with remaining stores located in La Zenia, Orihuela, and Port in Ondara.
Regarding the reasons for the decision, the company declined to comment, though staff indicated that lease renewal difficulties were among the factors considered. The closing date has not been announced, but June is the target period.
Ultimately, the Cortefiel move marks the end of one of the city’s most traditional shops, which opened in 1981 opposite Valuable Galleries and served as a central commercial engine for the provincial capital at the time.
Even though the opening of El Corte Inglés later shifted the commercial axis to Avenida de Maisonnave, the Golden Mile area retained activity through the building vacated by Uterqüe in Alicante, on the same Calvo Sotelo square where other brands such as Ese O Ese, Nichi Seijo, and Bimba y Lola are present.
In that same vein, a two-storey space formerly housed by the CaixaBank branch now accommodates Décimas; Ale Hop and Intercity head Vanadi’s cafe chain also occupy the vicinity.
The Cortefiel closing stands as one of the most significant business changes in Alicante in recent years. The El Corte Inglés operation in Avenida de Alfonso el Sabio closed late last year as part of a broader reorganization of its offer.
