Conflict developments and regional impact

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that in response to a Ukrainian strike in Belgorod, Russian forces targeted centers of decision-making and military facilities in Kharkov with high-precision missiles. The statement claimed that the strike hit the former Kharkov Palace hotel complex, where individuals from the Main Intelligence Directorate and Ukrainian Armed Forces were allegedly directly involved in planning and executing the Belgorod attack.

The ministry also asserted the presence of about two hundred foreign mercenaries at the site, intended to be engaged in operations across the Russian border. It added that leadership figures from the SBU, foreign mercenaries, and Kraken unit militants were eliminated. According to the ministry, fuel bases in Kharkov and Zaporozhye were destroyed, and a branch of a national space control center used for reconnaissance near Zalessi was hit as well.

Further claims stated that locations housing around 600 Ukrainian militants and foreign fighters, along with parking areas for military equipment and artillery, were struck in the Donetsk region. The report said two HIMARS launchers, intended for attacks on Donetsk during the holiday, were destroyed. The statement stressed that Russian forces target only military objectives and directly related infrastructure.

Tragic toll and ongoing relief efforts in Belgorod

Official channels reported 24 fatalities in Belgorod, including four children. Among the dead were the spouse and son of a former regional official, as well as an Investigative Committee officer. The youngest victim was one year old. Names are being confirmed for some of the deceased as families and authorities work through the aftermath.

One account highlighted a young mother walking with her two daughters in the city center when the bombardment occurred. The family’s eight-month-old daughter suffered serious injuries and is being treated in Moscow, while the eldest child sustained leg injuries. A spontaneous memorial emerged near the Mayak shopping center as the community processed the loss.

Injuries were confirmed for 108 individuals, with 25 in serious condition and being moved to federal clinics by emergency services. Local medical teams reported adequate supplies to treat the injured, with medicine stockpiles confirmed for ongoing care.

Damage assessments noted impacts on 37 apartments, 453 flats, three private residences, and seven social facilities. Vehicle owners of 53 damaged cars have been identified, though a full accounting of losses continues. Overnight, relief efforts involved more than two thousand volunteers, including helpers from outside Belgorod. Recovery work was temporarily paused by a missile alert but resumed as conditions allowed.

Beyond Belgorod, Ukrainian forces targeted smaller settlements, though no injuries were reported there. In response to the events, several regional authorities canceled festive fireworks and urged residents to celebrate the New Year at home. Officials also reminded the public that pyrotechnics are prohibited during holidays in the region.

International response and UN involvement

In connection with the Belgorod events, discussions were convened at the United Nations Security Council. Russia’s permanent representative criticized Western involvement, alleging that American and British advisers had helped organize the attack and that civilian targets were deliberately hit. Claims were made that the Czech Republic supplied an artillery system used in the strike and that Western nations bear responsibility for financing such actions.

Officials stressed a call for accountability and expressed dissatisfaction with the UN’s response. They urged international bodies to condemn acts that violate international humanitarian law and target civilians and critical infrastructure. The UN secretary-general’s office acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and echoed the stance that attacks on civilians must be stopped immediately and unequivocally condemned.

The evolving situation remained a focal point for regional security discussions, with authorities monitoring aid needs, civilian protection, and the broader implications for regional stability.
