The Civil Guard has reported a significant arrest connected to a long-running case in the Biara area. An old postal clerk, now under investigation, reportedly admitted to accumulating more than 20,000 letters at home. The letters were intended for delivery to residents of Alicante but were held back from 2012 up to the present day. The developments come as part of a broader inquiry into irregularities within a public service entity, with the suspect having previously worked as a maternity assistant under a temporary contract in 2012 and 2013. That contract was not renewed, despite ongoing checks into potential mismanagement within the organization.
During May, investigators received information from the Head of Distribution Sector in a district of Alicante city. A contractor who had recently bought a house in the Biara area reported finding a stash of sealed letters. The collection included official correspondence, individual letters, and documents related to the process of accepting consignments. The discovery prompted a review of whether the letters remained in the hands of the employee or if other parties might have benefited from withholding them.
The authorities acted quickly. After confirming the facts, they proceeded to the address in question and verified the presence of the individual inside the residence. It became clear that more than 20,000 letters, dated between 2012 and 2013, were intended for residents across a segment of Alicante. This raised questions about how the materials were managed and the potential impact on mail delivery schedules and civic operations in the region.
Further investigations into the correspondence cross-checked with the postal service’s information databases, focusing on property records and employee history. The Civil Guard identified the primary suspect as a former postal delivery worker who served in the field during 2012 and 2013. The individual reportedly resided in Alicante and maintained the same address while employed, which helped investigators piece together the chain of custody for the seized mail.
The documents recovered by the agents were seized for examination and safely stored at Correos facilities under secure conditions. They remain available to the competent judicial authorities, who will determine the appropriate course of action based on the evidence collected during the operation.
On June 1, law enforcement officers from the Villena Civil Guard Center and the Main Post Office executed an arrest at the Biara location. The suspect, a man of approximately 62 years who is of Hispanic origin, has been charged with deception related to the retention of mail documents. The case has been forwarded to the Villena Court of Guard and Investigation for further proceedings, and precautionary measures have been applied for the detention of the accused while the investigation continues.
