Ciudad Real County Court sentences suspect in a brutal case of homicide, abortion and desecration
The court sentenced the accused to twenty-five years and five months in prison after a week-long trial conducted by a popular jury. The verdict found the defendant guilty of treacherous murder, the crime of abortion, and the desecration of corpses. The case involved the killing of Nancy Paola Reyes, who was sixteen weeks pregnant at the time and residing in Santander in August 2020.
The sentence also included a duty to comply with a period of supervised release after prison terms and a set of civil reparations. The judge ordered the convict, by the time of release, to avoid proximity to the victim by family members and to pay substantial compensation to the victim’s family members, including their two daughters, the parents, and the accused’s own siblings, with specific monetary amounts established for each party.
Authorities noted that kinship factors weighed as aggravating circumstances in the sentencing. The court ruled that the defendant, who had been living in Ciudad Real with Nancy Paola in a stable emotional relationship, and who had moved to Santander in early August 2020, carried out the acts that led to the death of the unborn child.
On 20 August 2020, the accused allegedly approached Nancy Paola from behind, applied force to her neck, and strangled her in an act intended to end her life. This assault resulted in the death of the unborn child and subsequent dismemberment of the body with a meat pick, a process carried out with precision and placed into multiple garbage bags. The fetus was removed and not found previously.
The perpetrator reportedly disposed of the remaining body parts at a location described as a water park near the Cantabrian capital. It was characterized as a difficult-to-access, leafy area. The individual left the residence the following day and did not remain at the scene. Confirmation of Nancy Paola’s disappearance came on 26 August, prompting law enforcement action, with the accused turning himself in by 27 August after authorities alerted Madrid police about the case.
Nancy Paola’s remains were located on 17 September inside knotted bags, culminating in a formal investigation and the legal proceedings that followed. The court’s decision reflected the severity of the acts and their impact on the victim, her unborn child, and the extended family, leading to the comprehensive sentencing and civil reparations awarded in the judgment. The case underscores the legal system’s response to violent crimes involving intimate partners and vulnerable pregnancies, with ongoing monitoring through the terms of the sentence and civil obligations.
