Carrefour stands as the second-largest retailer by market share in the country, reporting sales totaling nearly 12 billion euros last year. The figures come from the company’s global accounts released yesterday, revealing that Carrefour Spain generated 11.8 billion euros in revenue, up 5.8% from the prior year. This keeps Spain in third place among Carrefour’s most important markets, behind France, the group’s home country, and Brazil.

In the release, the French retailer highlights that the year in Spain featured the near-era consolidation of roughly 50 stores acquired from El Corte Inglés, a deal that is expected to close in the coming months, along with growth across all formats. Carrefour Spain operates hypermarkets, supermarkets, and Carrefour Express stores, the latter being smaller urban outlets designed for quick trips and essential needs.

Additionally, the report points to the country’s solid performance in terms of returns on investments, even though the financial services environment remained challenging. This is reflected in a 14% rise in the ROI indicator, signaling better efficiency in allocating capital and resources in Spain.

“In 2023, Carrefour confirms the strength of its model even in a European market marked by high inflation and continues to improve its financial trajectory. These results stem from the hard work and exceptional daily commitment of Carrefour teams and their franchise partners, underscoring the relevance of the Carrefour 2026 plan, the effects of which are already visible in higher sales of private-label products and in the online channel,” stated the group’s chief executive, Alexandre Bompard. “Carrefour enters the new year with confidence and keeps advancing toward the 2026 targets,” he added.

Results at a global level show Carrefour boosting sales by 10% in 2023, reaching 94.1 billion euros, with profits up 23% to 1.65 billion euros. Roughly half of the total revenue comes from France, with 42.5 billion euros, driven mainly by hypermarkets, followed by supermarket formats and, at a lower scale, convenience stores. Brazil is the second-largest contributor, accounting for 21.3 billion euros, with Spain ranking third.

Beyond the regional leaders, Argentina led growth for the chain in 2023, with a more than doubling of its business volume. Belgium followed with a 9% revenue increase, while Romania added about 7% in the period. These movements illustrate Carrefour’s broad geographic footprint and its capacity to adapt to varied market conditions across Europe and the Americas.
