Ertzaintza detained a 53-year-old man this Thursday in Barakaldo (Vizcaya) on suspicion of involvement in the death of his mother, who reportedly died under unclear circumstances at Cruces Hospital. Medical staff who assisted the elderly woman at the hospital observed signs of violence, which were later noted by the coroner as relevant to the case.
The Basque Department of Security reported that the death occurred on April 26. Following the formal communication from Barakaldo Investigation Court No. 4, the police opened an inquiry, focusing on injuries not compatible with a simple fall as the possible cause, according to the son’s statement.
Investigators learned that the woman had not received the necessary assistance in the months leading up to the events. The son reportedly sought hospital care for his mother when her condition was described as extremely serious, but the actions taken earlier are being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
As this investigation progressed, the son was detained this Thursday afternoon on suspicion of involvement in a violent death. After completing the standard procedures at the police station, he is expected to be presented before the appropriate judicial authority for resolution of the case.
