A leading business voice in Alicante voiced strong criticism of the General Government Budgets unveiled by minister María Jesús Montero, describing the plan as a complete setback for the state and reiterating the sense that “Alicante is the forgotten Spain.” The message from the Alicante business community stresses the urgency for a swift, united response from the entire region. The call is clear: align local stakeholders now, consolidate a new action plan, and press for concrete changes that reflect Alicante’s needs in a national framework.
The representative from the Alicante Chamber of Commerce and Economic Federation argued that the current budget approach appears to widen disparities between regions and places the province at a marked disadvantage. There is concern that while large-budget proposals exist for other areas, the same emphasis does not translate into tangible resources for Alicante, despite the province contributing a sizable share to national revenue. This perspective sets the stage for a broader discussion about regional equity and the means to guarantee fair treatment across the country.
It is noted that the CEV Alicante chairman recently met with representatives from the Generalitat Valenciana Presidency to express deep concern over the allocations. It was conveyed that the institution would engage with CEV Alicante to identify specific budget lines that could help mitigate the adverse effects on Alicante and to chart ways to strengthen support where it is most needed.
As an initial step in shaping a coordinated intervention, CEV Alicante announced an extraordinary board meeting on Tuesday, October 11 at 16:00. The purpose is to address the seriousness of the situation and to determine a shared strategy in response to what is described as persistent state discrimination in terms of water resource demands, infrastructure gaps, and insufficient investment in budgets that affect the region’s capacity to grow and compete.
In line with this effort, the organizations planning to travel to Madrid next Thursday to brief Secretary General Xavier Flores will convene at CEV Alicante beforehand. The aim is to present a unified view of the gap experienced in this area and to call for action. The delegations include not only CEV Alicante but also the Alicante Chamber of Commerce, the Alicante Public Works Federation (FOPA), and the Alicante Institute for Economic Research (INECA). They intend to articulate a comprehensive case that highlights the province’s needs and the critical investments required to address them, with a focus on water resources, transportation infrastructure, and budgetary commitments that support long-term development.
