CEV Alicante Pushes for a Stronger Provincial Voice in Water, Infrastructure and Investment Debates

Joaquín Pérez, president of the Valencian Community Business Confederation (CEV) in Alicante, insisted on rigor as the guiding principle to defend the province’s interests. The message came during a board meeting where Alicante presented its candidacy to host the AI Agency headquarters, aiming to position the city as the sole candidate in the Valencian Community.

CEV Alicante gathered with the board of directors at Mercancía Mercantil this Wednesday, where the managing director, Dolores Mª Mejía, outlined the wide range of services offered to companies within the business park to boost competitiveness.

During the session, Pérez outlined the confederation’s key initiatives to safeguard the province, centering on three core axes: water, infrastructure, and investments.

On water, the president announced an October 14 conference featuring Teodoro Estrela, Director-General of Water at the Ministry of Ecological Transition. The event titled Water and Economy will present and discuss state water planning for Alicante and the Valencian Community, focusing on water needs, current deficits, and future scenarios shaped by climate change. In the infrastructure arena, a decisive October meeting with Isabel Pardo de Vera, the Minister of State for Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda, is planned. The dialogue will stress prioritizing infrastructure for Alicante in collaboration with the Alicante Chamber of Commerce, the Alicante Public Works Federation (FOPA), and the Alicante Institute for Economic Research (INECA). In parallel, leaders from the OUIGO company will explain delays impacting Alicante and reveal the economic and social benefits of the rail connection. Cited by CEV Alicante.

Additionally, the discussion will include a briefing for the Spanish Government Mediterranean Corridor Commissioner, Josep Vicen Boira, to assess project status and address any concerns. Questions persist about this corridor and its Cantabrian linkage. Cited by CEV Alicante.

CEV will urgently mobilize business participation to attract investments in Alicante and strengthen the case for hosting Spain’s AI Supervisory Agency, following a consensus reached by political, business, and academic sectors within a dedicated experts group. The confederation will urge regional and local governments to recognize Alicante as the sole proposed center within the Valencian Community. Cited by CEV Alicante.

Beyond this, CEV Alicante advances initiatives in collaboration with other organizations. An agreement with the University of Alicante will offer student internships at CEV and its affiliated firms; ongoing cooperative actions with the Alicante Health and Biomedical Research Institute (ISABIAL) will continue; a working group on economic revitalization for areas affected by the Vall d’Ebo fire will coordinate efforts; and a conference scheduled for October will bring together the Jovempa federation to discuss startups and investment in Alicante. In closing, Pérez stressed that the provincial business fabric comprises diverse sectors — footwear, toys, commerce, tourism, golf, marble, agriculture, and transportation — all supporting the effort to protect Alicante’s interests. Cited by CEV Alicante.

Facing numerous national challenges, the CEV Alicante president stated that the group will work to ensure that the state’s policies have an even impact, approached with rigor and intelligence and free from destructive criticism that offers no productive value. This stance helps explain why the province remains open to opportunities across many fronts. Cited by CEV Alicante.
