On Saturday, a 77-year-old man sustained injuries when a Metrovalencia tram struck him near the eastern edge of Mesado de València street, just before the underground tunnel portion where the city’s public transit moves from street to rail. The elderly man remained conscious after the impact and received immediate care at the scene for multiple injuries. He was later transported to a hospital by an SAMU ambulance for further evaluation and treatment.
The incident happened around 10:45 am as a tram on line 10 was approaching a pedestrian crossing adjacent to the accident site. The pedestrian was attempting to cross the street at a place where motorists and pedestrians share the same space, a moment that led to the collision between the tram and the pedestrian.
Valencia Local Police patrols, officers from the National Police, and municipal firefighters responded quickly to the scene. The man’s body was left partially pressed against a wall during the initial rescue operations, with rescuers working to provide assistance while keeping the area secure for other pedestrians and onlookers.
The tram was halted for about thirty minutes to allow firefighters to safely extricate the man and to clear the area so paramedics could tend to him. After the extraction, the casualty was stabilized and transported to hospital for ongoing medical care. His injuries required professional assessment and monitoring to determine any potential complications.
Officials noted that the incident could have had far more severe consequences, thanks to the newer Line 10 trams that incorporate a pedestrian deterrent system designed to reduce the risk of pedestrians being dragged or crushed in the event of a collision. This safety feature helps create an additional layer of protection for people near tram operations, though it does not replace the need for careful crossing behavior by pedestrians and alert braking by tram operators. Law enforcement and transit authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash to understand whether improvements or changes to signage, crossing design, or tram operations are warranted.
