Changes in the elasticity of the lens due to age, leading to a decrease in visual acuity at near when held at a distance, begin at about the age of 35 and become noticeable to the person after 40-45 years. Natalia Bosha, an ophthalmologist at the European Medical Center (EMC), told socialbites.ca.
These changes, called presbyopia, reduce the adaptability of the elastic lens, that is, its ability to move the gaze from one object to another without difficulty.
“There are two categories of people most susceptible to this condition. First of all, these are patients with “hidden” farsightedness of +2.0 diopters and above. Before changes in the lens begin to develop, they compensate for their farsightedness thanks to the accommodative abilities of the lens and can see both distance and near without glasses. “Therefore, they may not even be aware of this structural feature of their eyes,” he said.
Secondly, according to him, these are people with myopia who either do not use correction or wear glasses with missing correction. Therefore, the lens had no habit of accommodation, because in case of myopia there was no need to work at full strength and contract to ensure clear vision near the lens.
People with presbyopia are prescribed reading glasses and relaxation drops.
“In this case, relaxing drops can help relieve the spasm that occurs due to insufficient correction and distance vision will improve, but in this case, glasses are definitely needed for near vision. In the early stages of presbyopia, eye exercises help the person see up close without glasses. When the lens can no longer fully perform its vision-responsive functions, excessive strain leads to a number of complications. These include eye pain, headaches and increased intraocular pressure,” the ophthalmologist concluded.
According to the expert, spasm of accommodation also leads to the development of symptoms of asthenopia – burning, dryness, tearing in the eyes. When a person rubs their eyes with their hands, they increase the risk of transmitting germs to the eyelids and conjunctiva. Therefore, conjunctivitis, blepharitis and other infectious eye diseases occur.
