According to analysts, from January 1 to January 8, Russians increased their spending on spa services, entertainment events, restaurants and education compared to the same period in 2023, and also booked hotels in Russian cities more often. This is shown by a study by YuMoney and Chek Index, the results of which were reviewed by socialbites.ca.

Thus, the turnover of payments and the number of purchases on online platforms selling tickets to entertainment events and theaters tripled compared to the same period in 2023. The number of buyers has doubled. The average bill increased by 2%, reaching 2,214 rubles.

Online turnover of cafes and restaurants also doubled in the first eight days of 2024. Payments in catering businesses increased by 93% and the number of visitors increased by 48% compared to last year. The average bill also increased by 14% to 2,803 rubles. The number of purchases in cafes, restaurants and fast food stores during the January holiday overall increased by 7% compared to 2023. Total turnover increased by 15% and the average invoice increased by 8% to 1,050 rubles.

Experts state that Russians prefer to spend time indoors with their families and children due to severe frosts during the New Year’s holiday. They were especially involved in catering, relaxing in spas, and dealing with beauty and health issues. Despite last year’s high base, spending on services in the experience and entertainment categories increased noticeably.

There was a 31% increase in the number of purchases from children’s entertainment centers compared to the previous year. Payment turnover increased by 40% and the average invoice increased by 9%, reaching 11,602 rubles. In the first days of 2024, the number of movie ticket purchases increased by 11% and turnover by 16%, while the average bill increased by 5%, reaching 753 rubles.

The turnover of online payments for spa services increased by 43% compared to last year during the January holidays. Purchases of such services increased by 10%, and buyers increased by 27%. The average bill increased by 29%, reaching 4,707 rubles. Check Index experts also point out that the demand for spa services increases during the New Year holidays. Compared to last year, the total number of payments increased by 51%, turnover increased by 62%, and the average invoice increased by 11%, reaching 2,801 rubles.

In addition, during cold holidays, Russians began to go to beauty salons more often. Spending in salons increased by 3% compared to the same days in 2023, payment turnover increased by 10%, and the average check increased by 7%, amounting to 1,624 rubles.

During holidays, Russians also spent money on travel, but mostly for short distances. The number of purchases made from travel agencies increased by 11% compared to the same period in 2023. Payment turnover increased by 36% and the average bill increased by a quarter, reaching 17,829 rubles.

During the specified period, online turnover in hotels increased by 96%, payments increased by 60%, and those making payments increased by 41%. The average bill increased by 22% year on year, reaching 11,704 rubles.

In addition to entertainment, during the holidays Russians were also involved in education – they went to study at universities and retraining courses or paid for continuing education. Between January 1 and January 8, 2024, the turnover of online payments for education at universities doubled year on year. Payments and payers also doubled, but the average bill remained unchanged and amounted to 14,392 rubles.
