Scientists from Cornell University Graduate College have discovered that the coronavirus causes disruptions in the immune system by promoting the emergence of inflammatory fungi in the human intestine. Research results published In the journal Nature.

People who were seriously ill with Covid-19 participated in the study. Scientists took blood samples from the subjects and collected information about their health status.

The results of blood tests showed that some patients had malfunctions in the immune system. The study found that the failures were due to the presence of the yeast Candida albicans in the test subjects’ intestines. These fungi not only suppress the immune system but also contribute to lung damage. Scientists also found antibodies programmed to fight Candida albicans in blood samples. These antibodies are found in the blood even a year after recovery; Their appearance is stimulated by a protein called IL-6.

To suppress the activity of Candida albicans and thus eliminate the consequences on the lungs and immune system, scientists treated the subjects with antifungal drugs. It turns out that such drugs effectively block IL-6 receptors and reduce inflammation.

Scientists noted that the cause of long-lasting and severe Covid-19 may be inflammatory fungi in the intestines. Knowing this fact may contribute to the development of new effective treatment programs.
