Scientists from Al-Azhar University (Egypt) found that deep-fried falafel is toxic to the testicles of mice. The results of the research were published at: magazine Toxicology Reports.
Falafel is Egypt’s most common street food and is often deep-fried using palm oil. The authors of the study decided to find out how this food affects the reproductive system of male rats.
Thus, 21 adult male rats were randomly divided into three equal groups: The control group was given distilled water only, the second group was given fresh palm oleic oil, and the third group was given the same but after deep frying for 28 days.
The scientists also performed tests to determine serum testosterone levels, the oxidative status of testicular tissue, and sperm characteristics.
The results showed a significant decrease in serum testosterone, sperm count, and sperm motility in the second group of rats. Testicular histology in the third group also showed structural testicular abnormalities. According to scientists, a similar effect can be observed in humans, but this is not certain. More research is needed to determine the effects of fried falafel on humans.
