Slime or lizun is a viscous jelly-like mass that does not stick to your hands and can take any shape. Slime is often used as an anti-stress toy. However, it can pose a health hazard for children and adults. Slime absorbs small debris and is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Rospotrebnadzor reported this to socialbites.ca.
The main ingredients from which all types of slime are made are glue and an activator – a substance consisting of sodium tetraborate to thicken the mass. You can also add dye, glitter and beads to the slime.
Due to their viscous texture, slimes can accumulate dust, crumbs, and hair, which are then impossible to remove. This makes slime a suitable environment for the development of microorganisms. Your child can transfer these germs to his hands by playing with dirty slime. Also, young children often put slime in their mouths – contact of some microbes with the mucous membrane can cause an undesirable reaction and lead to inflammation if the child’s immune system is weak.
To protect your child, Rospotrebnadzor recommends changing slimes as often as possible and throwing away the toy after it falls on the floor. It is also stated that children under the age of three should not play with slime.
