A new peak in Covid-19 cases in Russia is predicted to occur in November, candidate of medical sciences immunologist Nikolai Kryuchkov said in a radio interview. Sputnik. He noted that an increase in the number of coronavirus infections has been observed in Russia since the end of August – the beginning of September. The immunologist suggested that there could be a significant increase in cases in early October and the exact timing will depend on monitoring the situation.
Kryuchkov noted that the autumn wave of coronavirus infections will peak in November and begin to decline in December. He also expressed confidence that there would be a noticeable decrease in case rates during the New Year holidays. However, the immunologist warned that the epidemiological situation may change at the end of January due to a new variant of the “omicron” strain of the coronavirus.
Kryuchkov noted that the “pyrrole” option (BA.2.86 suboption of “omicron”) is currently considered a possibly more aggressive strain. Although this subvariant has not yet been detected in Russia, it is actively mutating and spreading in other countries. However, there is no evidence yet that Omicron is more dangerous than previous versions.
The immunologist concluded that the best way to protect against coronavirus infection is vaccination.
