Korean scientists from Seoul National University have developed a soft robot equipped with a self-destruct function. If necessary, the device decomposes almost without trace, leaving only a small puddle behind. Research results published in the scientific journal Science Advances.

Experts have spent nearly two years creating materials that can support the full operation of the machine and, if necessary, break down with almost no residue.
Soft robots often use thermosetting silicone elastomer, a tough synthetic material that is resistant to heat, acids, and chemicals.

Korean scientists coated a silicon compound with a substance that releases fluorine ions under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. The device is equipped with ultraviolet LEDs, when activated, the composition begins to heat up and destroys the structure. In less than two hours the apparatus turns into an oily puddle.

The self-destruct feature could come in handy if the robot turns out to be impossible to remove and recycle, according to the researchers. Also the possibility of self-destruction will ensure that the development does not fall into the wrong hands.

Former Korean scholars created The world’s first humanoid robot pilot.
