Officials are investigating why the municipal infrastructure connected to S8 has not received water, a signal that the route was not prepared for the current level of rainfall. Tobiasz Bocheński, the Voivode of Mazowieckie, posted on social media that S8 is designed to handle present precipitation levels.
The situation should not occur. Local authorities will demand explanations from President Rafał Trzaskowski, according to statements from the regional governor.
Following the flooding of the S8 corridor near Żoliborz, traffic problems extend over more than 30 kilometers. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) reported that traffic is suspended in both directions on the segment between the Wisłostrada interchange and the Marymoncka interchange. The route is expected to remain closed for several hours.
Heavy rain caused the S8 corridor to flood between the viaduct, Mickiewicz Street, and the coast of Gdynia, with traffic halted in both directions. Detours have been organized
According to the Polish State Police, all access points to the route are blocked. The Road Traffic Department is working on site.
Transit traffic on the Poznań-bound direction is completely stopped. The auxiliary road can only be used to reach Wisłostrada. In the direction of Białystok, traffic is diverted via detours along Powązkowska Street and Broniewski Street, as reported by Sub-Inspector Sylwester Marczak of the Warsaw police.
Trzaskowski “monitors”
The mayor of the capital has already acknowledged the situation as it unfolds.
City officials are closely monitoring the heavy rainfall in Warsaw. Reports from city services indicate around 30 floodplains on roads, with numerous reports of flooded basements. The mayor has ordered water pumping in affected areas and instructed services to boost supervision and monitoring on roads and along waterways. While traffic problems are not widespread, the S8 segment remains the primary disruption and is under the management of the GDDKiA, with the road authority responsible for the section’s condition and passability.
The water from the S8 route is draining through gravity outflows to retention basins beneath the road and from there to the municipal sewer system. The source of the spill has not yet been identified, and gravity outflows remain unobstructed.
Spokesperson Małgorzata Tarnowska of the Warsaw branch of GDDKiA noted these drainage patterns and emphasized ongoing assessment of closure risks. Additional concerns were reported across other parts of Warsaw, including nearly all districts, as well as the nearby towns of Piastów, Pruszków, and Michałowice.
