despite autumn Astronomical doesn’t start until September 23, the climate has already done that for a few days. And the news about how this station will be in Spain is not very heartwarming. Experts agree on this it will be warmer than usual and also (at least in most of the country) it will be less rainy than usual during these months. In other words, the drought suffered by the country will not be compensated by the precipitation levels required to fill the reservoirs.
This is explained, for example, by AEMET, which predicts that autumn 2022 will be drier and warmer than the average for other autumns in most parts of the country. According to the agency, it can only rain as usual on the Balearic Islands and the eastern peninsula on these dates.
“In the Peninsular and Balearic Islands there is a 50% to 60% chance that autumn will be warmer than usual, while the probability of it being colder is 10% to 20%,” said AEMET spokesperson Reuben del Campo.
Other sources agree: “The fall 2022 forecast shows it could continue after summer: temperatures could be above average. Moreover, there will be a lack of rain in areas of the map that are subject to the greatest meteorological drought”, confirms the portal eltiempo.es through Irene Santa.
According to this expert, the safest thing in most of Spain (central and eastern half) is that the temperature is between 0.5ºC and 1ºC above the climatological average. This is probably what will be observed in Castilla-La Mancha, Aragon, the Commonwealth of Valencia, the Balearic Islands, Madrid, Catalonia, Navarra, La Rioja, the Basque Country and Cantabria. On the other hand, neither the Canary Islands, Galicia nor the Gulf of Cádiz will have such significant temperature anomalies and the season seems to be within normal parameters there.
And this is really September-October-November quarter will also be dry, especially in Galicia, Asturias, the two Castillas, Madrid, Extremadura and Andalusiathat is, the autonomies that need water the most after a truly disastrous summer in terms of water resources.
On the other hand, the Mediterranean coast, including the islands, can receive quite a bit of precipitation as the precipitation regime is expected to be average and autumn is usually the wettest season of the year in this region. The same can be observed in Cantabria, the Basque Country and Navarra.
a summer record
Record of extremely hot days in summer 2022 in SpainAccording to the State Meteorological Service (Aemet), a total of 42 days – almost half of the summer days – are in a state of heatwave.
This year’s 42 days multiplies the average number of days under a heat wave, which recorded an average of -6 days between 1981 and 2010, and triples the average of the last decade from 2011 to 2020, -14 days. So far, the record has been held in 2015 with a 29-day heatwave.
