Italy launches first investigation into mercenary clashes in Ukraine

In Genoa, Italy, a special regional mafia and counter-terrorism department has launched the first investigation into alleged Italian mercenaries fighting in Ukraine. Agency reports ANSA.

According to the agency, we are talking about 19-year-old Kevin Kyappalone, who joined the international voluntary military unit – Ukraine’s International Legion of Regional Defense.

It was noted that the reason for the investigation was the young man’s comment that he was planning to go to the Panorama broadcast to protect Ukraine from the ‘de-Nazification operation’.

ANSA emphasizes that Kevin Chiappalon shares the far-right ideology of the CasaPound association, which is classified as neo-fascist in Italy. According to the publication, the teenager, who has no educational experience, arrived in Ukraine from the Polish border in May. After receiving special military training, the young man went to fight in the Donbass.

The agency explains that participating in hostilities as a mercenary in Italy is punishable by two to seven years in prison.

Uzbek authorities had previously warned Criminal sanctions are imposed on its citizens for participating in hostilities abroad, including Russia’s special operation in Ukraine to liberate Donbass.
